Penang – The Pearl of the Orient

Known as the Pearl of the Orient, the intriguing island of Penang is located just south of Langkawi off the north-west coast of Peninsular Malaysia and has a diverse mix of culture and attractions.

Georgetown, the state capital of Penang has been widely influenced by the arrival of the British in 1786.  It’s fine 19th and early 20th century buildings are one of the largest collections of colonial architecture in South East Asia.  Divided into areas such as the Colonial Quarter, Little India and Chinatown there is much to see and do in Georgetown.

Within easy reach of Georgetown is the sprawling Bhuddist Kek Lok Si Temple.  The large temple complex comprises of a series of monasteries, prayer halls, landscaped gardens and the famous Pagoda of Rama VI, which at over a hundred feet is one of the largest pagodas in Malaysia.

Penang has wonderful beaches, Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are probably the most visited but there are number of secluded spots to be discovered.
