Legendary Langkawi

Lapped by the calm waters of the Andaman Sea, off the North Western coast of Peninsular Malaysia, the enchanting island of Langkawi is the largest of an archipelago of ninety nine islands.  Shrouded in fascinating myths and legends, this wonderful island is captivating, relaxed and beautiful.Legends tell that Langkawi originally derived its name from the words brown eagle, as a result a magnificent statue of an eagle can be discovered at Kuah Jetty, watching over the island.

Since the island gained duty free status, the main town Kuah, located in the south east of the island has become a shopper’s paradise and a visit here is an ideal opportunity to purchase some of the local shell and marble handicrafts. Tempted by stunning white powder sand beaches many visitors to Langkawi choose to laze in the sun for the duration of their stay. But there is much more to explore.

The Langkawi Cable Car offers magnificent panoramic views of the island and the Andaman Sea beyond.

Pulau Payar Marine Park, 19 nautical miles south of Langkawi is a fascinating haven for marine life, and is a wonderful place to snorkel or scuba dive. Back on dry land, the Underwater World aquarium is home to over 5,000 colourful fish and is worth a visit.

In the north west of the island is Telaga Tujuh, a spectacular waterfall which is broken by a series of seven natural pools, the area is surrounded by lush green rainforest and is extremely picturesque.  So scenic in fact that legend has it that fairies once bathed here.
