Laos
With a rich culture, the landlocked country
of Laos is not as well known as it's neighbours Vietnam and
Thailand, but is equally as beautiful and is full of history.
Situated along the Mekong River and among
fertile plains is Vientiane, the capital of Laos. This city
has a relaxed atmosphere and is known for its interesting temples
and lively markets. Places of interest include, Pha That Luang
which is the most important national monument in Laos, Patuxai a
large monument similar to the Arc De Triomphe in Paris and Ho Pha
Keo a former royal temple of the Lao monarchy.
Vang Vieng is a scenic district of Vientiane,
nestled behind the Nam Song River. Here you can visit the Tham
Chang and Tham Xang Caves.
Luang
Prabang is the ancient capital city of the Lan Xang Kingdom and is
famous for its historic temples and beautiful mountainous scenery.
In 1995 this area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Some of Luang Prabang's attractions include, Wat Xieng Thong which
is the most beautiful monastery in the area and the historic temples
of Wat Wisunalat, Wat Mai, Wat That Luang and Wat Saen.
Luang Nam Tha is a provincial capital and is
expanding in its role as a centre of commerce between China,
Thailand and Laos. Here you can visit the Phoum Puok Pagoda.
The area is renowned for its traditional handicrafts. The villages
Ban Nam Ngean and Ban Nam Lue are noted for their silk weaving and
paper making. Whilst the village of Ban Don Moun is known for
it's basket making.
The
town of Paske is home to Wat Phu Champasak, an impressive Khmer
temple site built on the lower slopes of Phu Pasak. These are some of
the surviving structures dating from the 6th Century.
Other nearby places of interest include Khong and Khon Islands along
the Mekong River.
