Cultural
Kuala Lumpur
In 1957 Malaysia declared
its independence. This major event took place in the captivating
capital of Kuala Lumpur at the Merdeka Square in the heart of the
city.
The city is a mixture of
architectural styles encompassing modern skyscrapers and
original colonial buildings, even the main railroad station is
intriguing in it's traditional Moorish design. This demonstrates the
Malay wish to preserve their cultured history whilst living in a
hi-tech modern environment.
Kuala
Lumpur is home to the Petronas Twin
Towers, which reach up some eighty eight storeys. For the brave, there is
a sky bridge located at the 41st floor which is open to
visitors and gives excellent views across the city and beyond.
Fabulous shopping is to
be found in Kuala Lumpur at Jalan Nukit Bintang, the ultra modern
shopping area known as the ‘Golden Mile’, and the massive shopping
centres such as Lot 10, Bukit Bintang and Kuala Lumpur Plazas. The city’s Chinatown,
located at Petaling Street and Jalan Bandar are also excellent
places for
bargains. You are able to buy a whole range of fashionwear,
gifts and ethnic jewellery – just remember to haggle!
