China
The fascinating country of China is renowned
for its intriguing ancient history, long held traditions,
spectacular architecture and stunning scenery.
With a population of 12 million, Beijing is
China's capital city and is home to some of the most well known
sights in the country. Including the huge Tiananmen Square
which is located in front of the impressive Forbidden City.
The Forbidden City, was built in 1420
and was home to a succession of emperors and their families until
the fall of the last emperor in 1911. The city is filled with
stunning and symbolic architecture and must be seen on any visit to
Beijing. Another attraction is the beautiful Summer Palace
built for the emperor and imperial family as a retreat from the warm
summers. The colourful Temple of Heaven was visited by the
emperor twice a year to make sacrifices to the Gods.
Not far from Beijing is the
magnificent Great Wall of China, stretching for 2,400 miles, it has
to be seen to be believed!
The modern and fast paced city of Shanghai is moving swiftly into the 21st Century. However, some
colonial era buildings can still be discovered along the Bund on the
west bank of the Huangpu River, this area was once a huge trading
centre and was home to European banks and trading houses. The
Yu Gardens built by a wealthy Ming dynasty family in the 1550's and
now restored to their former glory, can be a welcome retreat from
Shanghai's hectic lifestyle.
As the start of the ancient silk route Xian
was once the capital of China and has a wonderful rich and diverse
history. Xian has an interesting old city, although the
main reason for many peoples visits is the Terracotta Army (about an
hour from Xian) which
stand guard over Emperor Qin Shihuang's tomb. Other places of
interest in Xian include, the Bell Tower, the Drum Tower, the
Islamic Quarter, the Great Mosque and the Wild Goose Pagoda.
Picturesque Guilin, on the banks of the Li
River is home to some of the most stunning scenery in China.
Here limestone hills seem to rise majestically from the ground in
front of you to form beautiful landscapes. A popular way to
enjoy this scenery is a cruise along the Li River to the small
countryside town of Yangshou.
