Cambodia
The fascinating country
of Cambodia has much to offer the visitor. The stunning scenery, ancient history and wonderful temples are
just some of the many things to see
and do.
Phnom
Penh is Cambodia's capital city and sits at the confluence of the
Mekong, Bassac and Tonle Sap rivers. It is considered one of
the most beautiful of the French built cities in Indochina with
wonderful architecture. Places of interest include the Wat Phnom and
Wat Ounalom temples, the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, the
National Museum and Museum of Genocide and the busy central market.
Only
a few kilometres from the city of Siem Reap lies one the world's
most impressive temple complexes, Angkor. The area of Angkor
covers several kilometres and is filled with many impressive
temples. The most well known temple complex is Angkor
Wat, in 1992 this was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The ancient fortified royal city of Angkor Thom has many important
monuments such as the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper
King.
Tonle Sap also called the
"Great Lake" takes up much of the centre of Cambodia and varies in
size depending on the seasons, during the dry season it shrinks to a
tenth of its original size and it is then one of the richest fishing
grounds in the world.
Banlung is the provincial
capital of Rattanakiri, which is home to many ethnic hill tribes.
In this deeply forested area you will find many rubber, coffee and
pepper plantations. Nearby attractions include the spectacular
Teuk Cha Ong waterfall located in a jungle gorge. And the
picturesque Yeak Laom, a volcanic lake surrounded by tropical
rainforest.
Popular with Cambodians,
the seaside resort of Sihanoukville on the Gulf of Thailand is an
excellent base for visiting the Ream National Park which encompasses
21,000 hectares of coastal area including beaches, mangrove forests,
off-shore coral reefs and two islands.
